What to cook: deciding dinner in a minute

28 October 2026 · 4 min read

The question “what should we eat” comes up every day and drains energy every day. And what tires you is not the cooking but the choosing itself. The wheel removes that part — but only if the list is built properly.

Why eight beats thirty

A long list of dishes does not help, it paralyses: the more options, the harder the choice and the stronger the doubt afterwards. Eight is the limit where every slice is still readable and the difference between dishes still means something.

So cut first. Not “everything I can cook”, but “what I can actually make tonight”.

Step 1. Cut by ingredients

Look in the fridge and remove everything you do not have the ingredients for. This is the most important step: if a dish that requires a trip to the shop comes up, the draw is cancelled on the spot, and next time you will not trust the wheel.

Step 2. Cut by time

On a weekday evening there is not always an hour for cooking. Keep the dishes that fit your real time, not your ideal time. A one-hour pilaf is not a Tuesday option.

Step 3. Cut by who is eating

If you are cooking for several people, cross out what someone does not eat. This is not a discussion but a technical constraint: an allergy and “I do not like that” take an option out of the list equally.

Step 4. Spin the wheel

After three filters you usually have 6–8 entries left. Those are what you spin. There is a ready-made “What to eat” set with eight popular options you can replace with your own.

After that the rule is one: whatever comes up is what we cook. If you immediately want to spin again, that is your answer — you wanted a different dish. Cook that one, and then adjust the wheel so it stops offering things you do not want.

If you are not cooking only for yourself

The wheel is good at defusing family arguments about food, because it moves the conversation from “who insists” to “what we agreed”. It helps to build a shared list once a week: everyone adds their dishes, then the list is cut down to eight. After that, the evening needs no discussion at all.

Do not add “backup” dishes you would never willingly choose. They come up more often than you would like, and they are exactly what makes the wheel lose trust.

And if you want to order in instead

The same principle works with delivery: pizza, sushi, burgers, shawarma — a list of four to six items is settled in seconds. The main thing is that the options are on the same price scale, otherwise the choice stops being honest.

A dinner of eight options is already waiting.
