Randomizer or intuition

28 October 2026 · 4 min read

These are not two ways of deciding the same thing. They have different jobs: intuition answers “what do I want”, a randomizer answers “let it be decided, I am tired”. Confusing the two is the main reason a choice later annoys you.

When intuition works

Intuition is not magic, it is compressed experience. It is useful where you have already been in a similar situation and got feedback. Choosing a familiar café, a familiar route, a format of video you have tried — here the inner “I feel like it” usually rests on real memories.

Where intuition lies

When a draw is more honest

The main sign: the options are roughly equal and the decision is reversible. Which film to watch, what to order for dinner, which game to launch — a mistake costs one evening and is easy to fix. Here the draw does not take your freedom away, it saves the time you would spend turning the same thing over in your head.

A second sign: the decision has to be made together and nobody wants to take responsibility. A draw moves the responsibility onto the procedure, and the conversation ends.

The reaction test

There is a simple way to combine both approaches. Spin the wheel for real, but watch your first reaction rather than the result. If it lands on A and you feel quiet relief, the question is settled. If you feel disappointed, then you needed another option — and that is intuition answering, not the draw.

It works on one condition: the result has to be accepted for at least a couple of seconds. If you immediately say “fine, that does not count”, you are not running a test, you are looking for an excuse not to decide.

Randomness does not remove responsibility

A common illusion: “the wheel decided, so it is not on me”. In fact you chose the procedure, built the list and agreed to accept the result. That is your decision — just made once instead of ten times.

A simple rule: if the decision is reversible and the cost of a mistake is low, you can let the wheel have it. If it is irreversible or expensive, settle the criteria first, then the options, and only then, if they are still equal, draw.

What to do with regret afterwards

Sometimes after a draw a thought arrives: “actually I wanted the other one”. That is not a failure — you got information about yourself for free. Remember it and start with the option you regretted next time. If you regret it every single time, the list is built wrong: it contains options you are not really considering.

Test your reaction — spin the wheel.
